Despite that advice, some borrowers may consider riding out the payment pause, said Betsy Mayotte, the president of the Institute for Student Loan Advisors, a nonprofit that works with borrowers. Mayotte specifically points to some borrowers who who aren’t pursuing debt relief through Public Service Loan Forgiveness, or income-driven repayment, a suite of options that allows borrowers to pay their debt as a percentage of their income and have the remainder canceled.
Those borrowers may want to stay on the forbearance, perhaps because they can’t afford other repayment options right now or because they’re focused on paying down other debt, Mayotte said.
Borrowers may also want to use the forbearance period to target certain loans for aggressive repayment. Borrowers staying on the forbearance can still put money toward the debt to pay down the interest.
“There’s 1,000 different scenarios, so there’s no one answer to this,” she said.
